The Empowered Posse Skool Launch: Get In Proximity Now!
Your growth isn’t just about what you know; it’s about who you’re around while you grow. We unpack why proximity rewires your nervous system, shapes identity, and accelerates results—then map out practical ways to curate rooms that lift your baseline from survival to safety. From the anchors-versus-sails mindset to the science of vagus nerve regulation, we show how supportive relationships lower cortisol, improve sleep, and sharpen executive function so decisions get clearer and goals get easier.
We break down three game-changing layers of proximity. First, nervous system proximity: the people who help you regulate instead of trigger you, making safety your new success metric. Second, identity proximity: aligning with peers who already embody the habits, language, and standards you’re stepping into. Third, energetic proximity: frequency matches who reflect your vision, not your fear. Layer these together and the “quantum leap” becomes less mystical and more biological—steady hormones, deeper rest, cleaner boundaries, and consistent follow-through.
You’ll also hear ten research-backed reasons to upgrade your circle, from better digestion and growth hormone support to interrupting trauma patterns and reclaiming energy when you stop managing other people’s emotions. We trade quotes from Tony Robbins to Carl Jung and Brené Brown to show how connection transforms both body and mind. To ground it all, we’re opening Empowered Posse on Skool—a high-frequency community with group coaching, weekly rituals, challenges, guest mentors, and themes that start with relationships and boundaries. Come for the science and strategy, stay for the people who make progress feel natural. If this resonates, hit follow, share with a friend who’s ready to rise, and leave a review so more listeners find their room.
We love feedback! Send us a free text now.
You don’t rise alone. Join the Empowered Posse community and step into a circle that expands you. Skool is open NOW!

We've all been in in proximity to the wrong people, right?
SPEAKER_01:Oh my oh my god. I I think I think my life began in in proximity to a lot of low vibey people. And tend to be surrounded by low vibey people at the beginning of your life because you don't know better. That's my opinion. And as you as you age and as you wisen up, you start realizing that people can be either an anchor or a sail. And the moment that you choose the sails, that's when you get movement. That's when you change your horizon. That's where you know you get to master all the elements. But as an anchor, you're just you're staying put. And that's not a good feeling.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah. You have rocks in your boat.
SPEAKER_01:Correct.
SPEAKER_02:Welcome to the Empowerment Couple Podcast for the lovers, leaders, and legacy builders ready to rise. We're Zuri and Michael Starr, your favorite empowerment coaches, partners in life, love, and leveling up.

SPEAKER_01:Your most beautiful let's do it together. One, two, three. Your most beautiful life.
SPEAKER_02:Not good, not good. I definitely had um some negative players in different phases of my life. And um it's crazy how the proximity to negativity creates um a ripple effect in your life. Oh yeah. And then how the opposite is true. If you have somebody who's super positive and who has, you know, ideally has something that you're looking to obtain, you know, somebody who's mastered something, being around them is like gold. It's like worth gold. Correct, correct. Yeah. So let's dive into proximity. We did a show a couple years ago about um proximity is power. And this one is proximity is power, the community that changes everything. Because let's be honest, if you're in a community of people who all are working on the same exact habit or the same exact mission, it's palpable.
SPEAKER_01:It is, it is most certainly.
SPEAKER_02:And it's so powerful to see others change because there's something that happens where you feel like, oh, I can do this. I can change too. Like they're doing it, I can do it. And it it's like you instantly give yourself more permission.
SPEAKER_01:It's the uh the old saying, you know, if you place yourself in the room of five smokers, you're gonna be the sixth smoker. You place yourself in the room of five millionaires, you will be the sixth millionaire, right? So proximity most certainly is power, and it's a uh a lesson that tends to be learned the hard way.
SPEAKER_02:Mm-hmm. Yes, for sure. So you don't really need more information. We have tons of information just like coming at us day and night, right? This is like the information error is wild. Yeah. But you do need proximity, you need a room that calibrates your nervous system and calls up your next level.
SPEAKER_01:Amen, brother.
SPEAKER_02:Sister. So welcome back to the Empowerment Couple podcast, where we help you soulfully heal your body, bank, and bond and boldness. I'm Zuri.
SPEAKER_01:And I'm Mikey Starr. Today we're diving into a truth most people overlook. Right? Your growth isn't just about what you know, it's about who you are around while you grow.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, while you grow. And that's why this episode is called Proximity is Power, because we're here to talk about community frequency and why your environment is either pulling you forward or keeping you stuck.
SPEAKER_01:So, why this topic matters, the research is clear. Your nervous system mirrors the five people you spend the most time with. So if you're constantly around people who normalize burnout or chaos or gossip who are living in survival mode, it rewires you for that baseline.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah. But when you're in rooms where joy, purpose, ritual, wealth, and truth are the norm, you regulate to that. You calibrate to it. And that's how quantum shifts happen in your real life. So years ago, I had all the courses. Of course, I'm a course junkie, especially as I was starting out as an entrepreneur. I had all the knowledge, but I was isolated and very overwhelmed. Once I plugged into proximity with others doing the work, actually, not just isolating with like, you know, digital courses, everything in my life leveled up. I got into proximity, whether it was virtual proximity in a group or going to intensives, going to retreats, basically stepping way outside of my comfort zone and actually being around people that were living the life that I wanted.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah. Well, for me, I I didn't know how much I needed male allies who were also healing or building or showing up in the relationship uh the way they're supposed to until I actually reached out and found them. Right. So community isn't optional, it's the frequency that codes your nervous system for success. So if you don't have that proximity, reach out and grab that.
SPEAKER_02:Yes. So there's three types of proximity that change everything. One is nervous system proximity. So being around people who regulate you versus trigger you. Because, like we said, we all know what it's like to be around somebody who's super negative. And if you, you know, operate kind of automatically as a positive person, you'll find yourself triggered over and over and over again. Like I definitely identify as like my set point as positive. Like I don't wake up and like have complaints rattling in my in my brain. I wake up and I'm like grateful, excited. That's just my set point, right? And so if you're around somebody then who wakes up and is like, everything's fucked up, I'm gonna complain all day long. It's very challenging to not get triggered. Correct. It's it's like how you work that muscle. And you have to know like if your nervous system can't ever feel safe in proximity to that type of personality, time to exit. And safety is important because safety is the new success.
SPEAKER_01:Say it again, sister.
SPEAKER_02:Safety is the new success.
SPEAKER_01:I totally agree. I mean, it it how many times have you tried to create a place of dysregulation? It never happens. We we tend to find ourselves battling our internal dialogues more than making any type of progress because we are not fighting to to produce, we are fighting to survive. And that's why we need to have a nice regulated nervous system. Number two, identity proximity, right? So you want to hang with people who live the identity that you're trying to step into, right? The whole the old conversation, if you want to be a better chess player, you play someone who's better than you, right? Your future self already lives in the room that you haven't entered yet. And if you function just off of that mindset, right? Your future self already lives in the room you haven't entered yet, it it's showing you that you are currently in the wrong room. Right? You might be in a room full of doubters or haters or someone who is, you know, the whole crabs in the bucket syndrome, right? So your future self is waiting for you to enter the room that is full of individuals who are going to bring you up.
SPEAKER_02:Yep. So the three would be energetic proximity. So not just friends, but frequency matches. And that's really powerful because uh everything is energy, right? So you want to be around people who reflect back your vision, not your fear.
SPEAKER_01:I like what you say in re in regards to frequency matches, right? Very often we're talking about, oh, you know, this person is cool, this person is cool, this person sucks because they're this white. And what they're really talking about is this person has the same frequency as me. Right? They have the same values of me, they have the same drive as me. That is proximity.
SPEAKER_02:Yes. So, and if you're not convinced with these top three, there's 10 more compelling reasons to upgrade your relationships. Number one is your nervous system mirrors your environment. So healthy relationships regulate your vagus nerve. And your vagus nerve, we've talked about a lot on the show. It's all along the right side of your from the top of your neck all the way down. So if you have a sore right neck like me, um, your vagus nerve might be a little bit tweaked. So healthy relationships will regulate your vagus nerve, lower cortisol, and make your baseline state calmer and safer.
SPEAKER_01:Number two, chronic stress often starts with unhealthy connections. Toxic dynamics lead to inflammation, poor sleep, gut disruption, and a weakened immunity system. So upgrading relationships often eliminates the root cause of all these illnesses.
SPEAKER_02:It's so crazy. It's like, you know, you go to the doctor, you take all of these tests, and then they're like, oh yeah, everything looks normal, quote unquote. And then, like, you know, they don't ask you anything about who you're hanging out with. Who are the five people in your life you're hanging out with? You know, or like, what's things like at home? You know, like they're not asking you any of that. And literally, that could be the root cause. Correct. It's like, who are you hanging out with? What are your relationships like? Do you feel safe in them? So, number three would be supportive relationships literally extend your lifespan. And we see this over and over again in like blue zones, right? Strong social bonds are as powerful as quitting smoking, improving cardiovascular health and longevity. That is so, so we need to be in proximity and communities that help us thrive. And literally, they're gonna extend our life.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, indeed. Uh, number four, emotional safety creates hormonal balance. So secure connections stabilize serotonin, dopamine, and oxytocin, which is the trio that supports mood, motivation, and energy. Right? So it is crucial that you put yourself in a situation where you have the proper proximity that will boost your nervous system and your hormonal balance. It's it's yeah, it's critical.
SPEAKER_02:It's all connected. Your body digests differently around different people. This is number five. Stressful connections activate fight or flight, shutting down digestion. So loving relationships activate rest and digest, helping your body heal and absorb nutrients. And if you think about that, it's probably like why, you know, you get like nervous stomach, let's say, before you go do something around people that make you uncomfortable or that, you know, are outside of your comfort zone. And then like how you go out to dinner, let's say, and then you're eating with somebody and you're just like, God, why am I not? I'm not really that hungry. Because like you're literally freaking out because you're, you know, unable to just be present and grounded and rest and digest.
SPEAKER_01:Exactly. I mean, if you were if you were remembering any type of weird digestive issues directly after your Thanksgiving dinner, it may not have been the food. Right? It could be Uncle Jim talking, you know, crap. Trash. Okay, number six, upgraded relationships interrupt trauma patterns. I love this one. When you upgrade to emotionally mature, reciprocal connections, your brain rewires towards safety and not survival. Right? So the right person can lift you up and the wrong person can can see your demise. So if your relationship needs to be upgraded, upgrade it immediately.
SPEAKER_02:Yes, I love that. Number seven, you make better decisions from a regulated state. Healthy bonds elevate your executive function clarity and long-term thinking, which improves finances, health goals, and habits.
SPEAKER_01:I mean what it's almost as if seven is almost like the most important.
SPEAKER_02:Right?
SPEAKER_01:You make better decisions from a regulated state, and you get a better regulated state when you're around people who have regulated states.
unknown:Yeah.
SPEAKER_01:Right?
SPEAKER_02:It's so simple.
SPEAKER_01:It's so, so simple. All right, number eight, sleep improves dramatically, or your sleep improves dramatically. Peaceful relationships, lower nighttime cortisol, reduce rumination, and increase deep sleep cycles. We all want those deep sleep cycles.
SPEAKER_02:Yes, that's where all the magic happens. Number nine, healthy relationships activate growth hormones. What? Yeah. So safety and connection increases HGH, which is the human growth hormone, supporting tissue repair, metabolism, and anti-aging.
SPEAKER_01:So basically, your healthy relationship can give you the proper gains you're looking for.
SPEAKER_02:It can give you, yes, proper gains. It can give you a fountain of youth.
SPEAKER_01:You got nice glutes. You must be in a good relationship. Finally, number 10, your energy rises when you stop managing other people's emotions. When you're no longer drained by walking on eggshells or overgiving, your vitality skyrockets. Physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Like you get your gains. All the parts of you.
SPEAKER_02:Everything's gains.
SPEAKER_01:It gains. All the parts of you awaken because they're not under attack. Right? They're not being pushed down. They they have the opportunity to come up and and be a part of your life.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, totally. Well, let's do a quote battle.
SPEAKER_01:Oh, I got quotes for decades. What you got?
SPEAKER_02:Okay. Uh, this is our game for the day. It's our quote battle. Ready for this? I do. Okay, I'm gonna I'm gonna launch my first quote battle on you.
SPEAKER_00:Okay.
SPEAKER_02:Battle battleship ready? From Mr. Tony Robbins. The quality of your life is the quality of your relationships. Boom!
SPEAKER_01:Boom. And I and and you come out the you come out the gate with the heavy hitters. Tony Robbins has quote after quote after quote. I love that. Uh here's a quote from S. Kelly Harl. States that we don't heal in isolation, but in community.
SPEAKER_02:Ooh. Community. Yes, you have to be witnessed. Um, okay, Carl Jung.
SPEAKER_01:Oh yeah, okay. This is a small one.
SPEAKER_02:The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances. If there is any reaction, both are transformed.
SPEAKER_01:Ooh, if there's any reaction, both are transformed. Yeah, that's the transformation that you're looking for, the positive transformation.
SPEAKER_04:Right.
SPEAKER_01:All right, I'm gonna back it up with uh Brunei Brown, who states, connection is why we are here. It is what gives purpose and meaning to our lives. Purpose and meaning is everything.
SPEAKER_02:Mm-hmm. We are we're here for connection, yo. Okay. Uh I'm gonna do a little movie. A movie uh famous actress.
SPEAKER_01:Okay.
SPEAKER_02:Lil Hepburn.
SPEAKER_01:Oh, Audrey Hepburn. Okay.
SPEAKER_02:The best thing to hold on to in life is each other.
SPEAKER_01:Indeed. Especially when each other is user.
SPEAKER_02:Okay.
SPEAKER_01:I'm gonna I'm gonna go for some Buddha. Yeah, I'm gonna go for some Buddha.
SPEAKER_02:You have Buddha in your pocket.
SPEAKER_01:I mean, you had you had Carl Young and Tony Robbins, but Buddha states that what we think, we become, what we feel, we attract, what we imagine, we create, right? It's the we part that we wanna focus on, right? So collectively, so it you know, if you're manifesting, the more people you manifest with, the faster that manifestation is gonna come.
SPEAKER_02:Absolutely, because it's just energy. All right, I see your Buddha with Dalai Lama.
SPEAKER_01:Oh, come now, Tibbs.
SPEAKER_02:Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them, humanity cannot survive.
SPEAKER_01:Indeed.
SPEAKER_02:So, where are you gonna get that love and compassion from? Your community, your proximity, the people that you are closest to.
SPEAKER_01:Now, this quote has been attributed to a lot of people. What you got?
SPEAKER_02:What you got?
SPEAKER_01:So here it is. The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.
SPEAKER_02:Oh, yeah. I think it's like Beetle. I mean, it's like in a lot of places. I don't know. Maybe the Beatles came up with I don't know.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, it's all over the place.
SPEAKER_02:Anyway, okay, I've got one more. Are you ready for this? Assumptions are the termites of relationships.
SPEAKER_01:Ugh.
SPEAKER_02:Henry Winkler. You know what? Boom!
SPEAKER_01:You know what? We could literally do a full podcast on assumptions and how dangerous that they are.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah. Right? Honestly, it's like one of my very biggest pet peeves, and is when somebody is like, oh, they start talking to you as if they know everything about you and they start making assumptions. I'm saying, wait, wait, wait. What? Like you're projecting. Like, what's happening here? So, yeah, assumptions are wild. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01:Assumptions are the termites of relationships. I'm gonna keep that one in my my uh my vault here. That one's a nice one.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, and the really the only way you build uh a relationship is by listening and staying open and you know, allowing the person to reveal themselves. But we're all making assumptions, you know. Like I could say it's like a pet peeve, but like we're all doing it. So like it's a good lesson for all of us to be realize like don't make an assumption. Yeah, you gotta manage them terms. So, based on knowing all of this, everything that we've shared, the you know, top three, and then the 10 and then the quote battle, it was a fun game, right? Yes, but based on knowing all of this, we have an exciting announcement in a way that we are going to give back to our empowered posse during the giving season. It's happy holiday time, time to give, time to show up and serve. So we created a brand new school community for you, and we're naming it after you, the empowered posse, because we wanted to share a space where this kind of high frequency proximity was the baseline. So it's an additional way for us to show up and serve you, love. Every month we move through a transformational theme starting with relationships. December is all about relationships and proximity, but not just romantic ones, your relationship with your body, your boundaries, your inner circle, your communication, your nervous system.
SPEAKER_01:We take care of you. So inside this, you're gonna get group coaching and challenges, uh, weekly rituals and activations, of course, daily support. Uh, we'll have some guest mentors coming in and a powerful private community of people who actually are doing the work.
SPEAKER_02:Yes. And like I said, December's theme is all about clearing up the people-pleasing, codependency, loneliness, and isolation that's keeping you stuck and stepping into healthy, aligned relationships and a healthy community. We are gonna hold that space.
SPEAKER_01:Because the truth is, you weren't meant to do this alone.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah. And if you've been craving deeper connection, real accountability, and a place where your growth is actually supported, this is your invitation. Founding members are joining right now at a half-off rate inside Empowered Posse, and you can get three different tiers. So you'll have the option to get additional coaching or you can get course access. There's all kinds of options, but it's accessible now. So I want you to get in there as fast as possible. You will lock in your half off holiday rate, founder rate, and be grandfathered in at that rate. It the price will never go up for you, so run.
SPEAKER_01:Right now, click the link in the show notes to join today.
SPEAKER_02:Your next level is built in community, and we'd love to welcome you inside. This is part of our expansion. We're excited and we can't wait to see you on the inside.
SPEAKER_01:You've tried doing it alone. Now let proximity do the heavy lifting.
SPEAKER_02:Ooh, I love that. Proximity does the heavy lifting. It's so true. Like, I I think of all of the things that I've done in my life that were extremely hard, they became very easy when I had the right people in my life. And they those same exact things that I, you know, was aiming to do maybe years prior, were so challenging because I didn't have the right people on my team, or I didn't have the right clients, or I didn't have the right relationship, or I didn't have a community that could actually hold me through my transformation. So so excited we're doing this. Thank you for walking this walk with me and being bold and brave and holding space for our community. This is the next level of the Empowerment Couple podcasts, and I'm so excited that we are showing all the way up.
SPEAKER_01:Indeed, indeed. Well, in regards to serving love, the only way to serve love is with our most authentic selves. And part of the uh proximity is being able to show up in authenticity amongst other people who are also showing up in authenticity.
unknown:Yeah.
SPEAKER_01:So you have the opportunity to level up at a at a quantum level.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah.
SPEAKER_01:Right. Versus doing it in a silo and kind of pushing and grunting and you know, you know, it could be done, but it could be done so much easier and faster and greater when you have the right team working in tandem with you.
SPEAKER_02:Yes. And we have a full team of support. And when you go there, if you haven't been to school, school is kind of similar to other social media platforms, but it's all about expansion and learning and you know, accessing people who maybe were only doing these types of containers, like what I'm doing, I've only done, you know, behind closed doors on like Kajabi. And now it's going to be accessible to anyone who wants to join.
SPEAKER_01:And school is a is a platform, right?
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, school is just like social media platform. Spelled S K O O L. But yeah, just click the link, check it out. It's super accessible. And I just can't wait to see you on the inside.
SPEAKER_01:See you on the inside indeed. Let's go. Let's play that proximity game. You know, it's always you can always tell if you have positive proximity or negative proximity by various aspects of your life. How you're dressed, the food that you eat, what you call recreational, the type of work that you do, how you show up, right? And if you go ahead and and and look at yourself, you will tell whether or not you are in positive or negative proximity.
SPEAKER_02:So once you're inside school, you'll see that tier two is talking all about embodied rituals, and that's like a year-long experience with me teaching you how to upgrade the 12 areas of your life. And it's kind of funny because at one point it was called happiness habits, and we focused on you know creating a happy life, and we taught it like you know, in Kajabi, not publicly. And if you think about like healthy habits, any part of healthy habits and and happiness habits, you can't really be happy and build like a life of happiness if you're around somebody who's like have you ever seen that skid on Saturday Night Live, the like Debbie Downer? Oh yeah, it's like old, but it's like so freaking classic. So, like, if you haven't seen it, just get on YouTube and and laugh for with us for a second. But like Debbie Downer basically could be anywhere, and she will be like every year, you know, like this horrible stat will come out of her mouth, just like blah blah blah. She just vomits all over the entire scenario, no matter what the scenario is.
SPEAKER_01:Like, you know, we're gonna we're gonna go to Disneyland every year.
SPEAKER_00:500 people fall out of Disneyland rides.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, and it's always like okay, so I'll add that sound later, but it's hilarious because like you can't build a happy life if you're suffering, and we always talk about suffering being for suffers because like suffering sucks you down, yeah. And in the beginning of the show, we were talking a lot about like you know, you can either have an anchor or a sail, you know, around you. And the empowerment couple exists only because we, you know, like beginning of the pandemic, we're like, we need to lift people.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, this is this is we're going in the wrong direction.
SPEAKER_02:Going in the wrong fucking direction. And also, like, hey, let's just look at what we do have. Like, let's talk about free medicine, let's talk about, you know, the importance of proximity, let's talk about things that really lift us, that really like make us feel happy and excited about life. Like, there's enough news out there that is literally the Debbie Downer skit.
SPEAKER_01:Oh, all day long.
SPEAKER_02:Like, that's what they profit off of. And like the programming that we want to serve without profit on this podcast is like a hundred percent about serving love and helping you be like as happy as fucking possible. And it's such an honor to be able to be able to do that because I know a lot of people don't operate in that way. They that's not a set point for them, but it is a set point for us. Like we want, we love showing up and serving love on this show. And this idea of just pulling people together and actually being able to have a conversation with you and sit with you is so exciting to me. How about you?
SPEAKER_01:Oh, most certainly. I, you know, when you you talked about uh, you know, suffering is for suckers, and for some reason I got this this this vision that we are all tribes, we're we're we are tribal beings, right? So imagine you are your tribe, if you were to name your tribe, would your tribe be the tribe of sufferers or the tribe of doubters, or the tribe of complainers, right? Who are you in a tribe with? I knew growing up that I found myself in a tribe of a lot of complainers. I found myself in a tribe of a lot of people who are really focused in on self-sabotage. And I was like, whoa. So I was doing all those things until I bumped into someone who wasn't doing those things. Right? I bumped into you and you weren't complaining, you weren't self-sabotaging, you were on the way up. And as I allowed myself to gravitate more towards your tribe, some of the tribe members that I was hanging out with disowned me. I was like, what? Oh, we don't want to be your friend anymore because you're happy. I was like, well, that's cool. We don't want to be your friend anymore because you don't want to drink with us. It was like, bye. You know what I mean? It's like, like, what tribe are you with?
SPEAKER_04:Yeah.
SPEAKER_01:And and and how long do you want to be there?
SPEAKER_04:Right.
SPEAKER_01:And if it's a positive tribe, if it's a millionaire tribe, amazing.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, and that's what I would say is like, you know, in you'll see on the school page, there's a video, and I and I say it in the video of like, if you have like a bestie, you know, or a friend that lives too far away, or like somebody that you know you want to rise with, like, get them in this community with you. Like it's so inexpensive. It's like them up, you know, probably less than what you pay for Netflix and Amazon Prime or whatever, you know, like it's cheap, y'all. Um, for a reason. Like, we want you there, sending you the highest vibration.
SPEAKER_01:You are always held.
SPEAKER_02:You are always loved. I want you to invite everyone. Think of that in in alignment with this work. Let's rise together.
SPEAKER_01:Leave your complainant your your complaining posse, leave your suffering posse, right? Leave your your anti-social or self-sabotage posse and join the empowered posse.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, let's fucking rise together. Okay.
